Finding Care Choices in Wyoming - just got easier
Wyoming with its 97,914 square miles is the 9th largest state in the Union with a general population of approximately 515,000 of which 12.2% are 65 years and older. Seventeen of Wyoming ’s 23 counties have fewer than 6 people per square mile, which is the most widely accepted definition for “Frontier” by federal agencies. The entire state of Wyoming has 5.17 people per square mile. Forty-seven percent of the state’s citizens live in Frontier areas of Wyoming, with the exceptions of the citizens in Cheyenne and Casper.
As a result of the vastness of Wyoming and the sparse population centers, health care issues in general and specifically for seniors are closely and seriously addressed by the Wyoming Depart ment of Health and Aging Services. By creating the Rural and Frontier Health Division they are able to respond to existing healthcare issues for their seniors through the Older Americans Act programs, such as: supportive services, nutrition, health promotion and disease prevention, caregiver support, elder rights, legal assistance, ombudsman, Community-Based In-Home Services, Senior Centers, Meal Programs and volunteer programs.
With the availability of Adult Day Care, Assisted Living Communities, Boarding Homes, Community-Based In-Home Services, Private In-Home Care Services and Nursing Home Facilities, the State of Wyoming certainly has stepped up to provide for their seniors and is certainly living up to the state’s motto: “Equal Rights”.
