Adult Family Homes

An Adult Family Home can be a comfort zone for the senior who enjoys a home-type environment with the same familiar interactions day-in and day-out among a small group of seniors and their care provider(s).

There are over 2600 Adult Family Homes through-out the State of Washington. All are licensed by the Department of Social & Health Services, Aging and Adult services. Each Adult Family Home can take care of two to six individuals. Adult Family Home providers and their staff must be certified in the areas of specialty they
wish to provide.

Prior to admission into an Adult Family Home a standard nursing assessment by a professional assessor, such as a RN is required. Adult Family Homes provide housing, meals, care for specific needs, which may include varying levels of assistance with personal care, assistance with medication management, incontinence care, and/or intermittent nursing care (a RN is available on a part-time basis, or full-time if the home is owned by a RN/care provider).

Adult Family Homes and their care providers are as diverse as each region within the State. Some are run by families with children, couples or a single person. The owner of the home chooses the level of care provided in the home and receives the training needed. Additional employees may be hired. In some homes multiple languages are spoken, some read the newspaper each morning with their residents, while others offer music therapy, bible study and other varied activities, adjusting them to the capabilities of their clients. Some even allow small pets.

Some Adult Family Homes provide specialized care to people with developmental disabilities, dementia, or mental illness
