Finding Senior Care Choices for Mom or Dad in Utah – just got easier.
Utahns place great value on their seniors ability to maintain their self worth and individuality as their need for senior care increases. Supportive programs exist to help seniors maintain their need for privacy as well as their quality of life. The licensed choices in Utah include:
-
Adult Day Care
-
Assisted Living - Type I & Type II
-
Nursing & Rehabilitation Centers
-
Skilled Nursing Facilities(SNF)
Most care choices in Utah fall under the terminology “Assisted Living”. Assisted Living Facilities are regulated and monitored by the Utah Department of Health, with an inspection once a year. Complaints and compliance issues are dealt with as needed.
Assisted Living is a residential facility that provides or contracts to provide supervisory care, personal care, or directed care on a continuing basis. Assisted Living in Utah is divided into two categories depending upon the scope of care required:
Assisted Living Type I Assisted Living Type II
Assisted Living Type I is a residential facility that provides assistance with the tasks of daily living (ADLs, i.e. personal hygiene, mobility, eating, dressing, toileting, and behavior management) and social care to two or more ambulatory residents who are able to safely exit the facility without the hands-on of another person. These facilities may not serve anyone who requires significant assistance during sleeping hours or requires close supervision and a controlled enviroment.
Assisted Living Type II is a home-like setting that provides an array of coordinated supportive personal and health care services throughout the 24 hour day. Type II facilities must offer private living units, unless shared by choice. Type II facilities are intended to enable residents to age-in place. Residents may be either independent or semi-independent, but not dependent.
Assisted Living facilities in Utah can range from large facilities (17 or more residents) to limited capacity facilities that may be only able to take up to 5 people at any one time.
An option that is often under-utilitized and is licensed in Utah is Adult Day Care. Adult Day Care programs provide an excellent opportunity for seniors to receive some socialization and companionship, along with some personal care outside their home during the day. This option can provide some needed relief for a family member or spouse who daily provides care for a loved-one.
Seniors who require more in-depth care than can be provided by either Day Care or Assisted Living facilities can depend upon a well-regulated long-term Nursing care program in Utah. Nursing Centers provide 24 hour care for those who require long-term nursing care or may have become a danger to self or others or have needs that cannot be met adequately either at home or in the assisted living enviroment. Short-term rehabilitation programs exist in many of the Nursing facilities. |
