The Senior Care Guide - Support Groups

Support Groups

Support Groups come in many sizes and shapes, and are as varied as the people who partipate in them. For some, it may be a small gathering of people in similar situations sharing their stories - as well as very practical information. Others may find an online chat group helpful -- one you can join from home at any time.

In general, support groups fall into two main categories: those led by professional facilitators, such as a nurse, social worker or psychologist; and those led by group members, which are often called peer or self-help groups.

Some groups are designed to be more educational and structured. They may invite a doctor to give a talk on a new treatment. Others emphasize emotional support and shared experiences. Some deal only with a specific type of disease, while others are more inclusive.

The Internet has also become a great source for support groups and communities. We will make every effort in the above search to include those internet support groups we have been made aware of. Please don't hesitate to let us know if you discover one that is helpful to you, but is not listed on this site.

Most support groups are free, collect voluntary donations or charge only modest membership dues to cover expenses.

Select a support group that fits your particular situation. Each type of support group has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some prefer a structured, moderated group where speakers are arranged and the emphasis is on education. Or you may feel more at ease meeting informally with a small group of people.

If you have never attended a support group, you may find it initially more comfortable to attend just to listen, or go with a friend. You may also consider the Internet. But, be careful. The anonymity of the Internet may be appealing, but the trade-off may be that you don't know who else is online with you or whether you can believe everything you read. Make sure the group is associated with a reputable organization or led by an expert. Of course, be careful about what you give out over the internet.

Support groups are there for you, but also your opportunity to give back to others as you share your life experiences, your struggles and helpful solutions or questions. If you are aware of a support group not listed for your area, please let us know. We will be more than happy to put them on this site.
