The Senior Care Guide - Senior Day Care Across America
About Senior Day Care - Respite Opportunities
According to the Agency on Aging, more then seven million people are providing informal caregiver services for friends and loved ones. That is an incredible number of people across America who are extending their hands and hearts daily to the most frail in our communities.
Caregiving is physically, mentally and emotionally draining. The day-in and day-out needs of everyone involved take their toll. Day Care is a great way to help alleviate some of the stress of caregiving. Have you known some who wonders if she/he will "out-survive" the person for whom they are caring? Do you sometimes wonder if the person providing the care is now also at risk of needing help? Suggest Day Care to them!
Day Care is offered in many communities to help caregivers and their families relieve stress and give them an opportunity to resume normal activities for a short duration. While the person is in a Day Care program, the caregiver is able to perhaps do some shopping, go out to lunch with a friend or neighbor, or even go for an afternoon walk.
Day Care programs can take different forms. Some programs are part of a Senior Center program while others may be set up as a stand-alone program with its own facility or gathering spot. In a safe, comfortable environment, participants are involved in a variety of activities designed to foster self-esteem, maintain social and daily living skills, exercise the body and stimulate the mind. Activities may include everything from exercise, art, crafts, music, inter-generational programs, community outings and interaction with peers. In many of the programs at least a lunch will be served. In some areas, transportation may be available, or can be arranged.
Senior Day Care also helps seniors who are able to spend the evenings in their homes, but need assistance and recreational opportunities during the day, and the extra stimulation and social contact rather than being at home - alone. Every Day Care program is different and has its own personality - often reflective of the other program participants. Take the time to explore and visit the various programs in your community to help select the one that best fits your senior.
