Assisted Living Communities
California Law requires that all Assisted Living Communities that offer personal care services to their residents to be licensed through Community Care Licensing, a state agency.

Assisted Living Communities are for the seniors who can still live independently in their own private apartment, enjoy socializing, but might require some assistance with their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as: personal hygiene, dressing, toileting, mobility, eating, and behavior and medication management.

These communities come in many sizes, building styles and locations. Generally, studios, 1-bedroom and a few 2-bedroom apartments are available. All are designed with extra wide hallways, large walk-in showers to accommodate walkers and wheel chairs, hand-rails, good lighting, emergency pulls and many other amenities to make life more secure and easier for the senior.
All meals, housekeeping, laundry services and some socialization programs are included in the monthly rent. Individualized care services are billed as an extra charge. Prior to move-out a 30-day notice is required. Most facilities have their own bus transportation for outings and to take residents to doctor appointments, shopping, etc.

For the senior who loves to socialize, stay as independent as possible with just the right amount of extra help needed – this setting is a great option.
Check for location desired (CLICK on Search Icon), make an appointment with the staff for a tour. Often you are invited for lunch; check out the food served and its presentation. It will also give you a chance to take a peek at the other residents, giving you an idea if this community would be your mom/dad’s cup of tea. Is there a dress code? Is everyone’s attire casual? Is it a younger, older senior population?
During your tour you will be given a packet with information, pricing and a copy of the disclosure form that describes the care and services that this facility will offer.

If you choose to look at several facilities in your area - narrow it down to a couple and then bring mom/dad along for the second visit and let them make the final decision. This will create a much easier transition for them and you. No matter what age any of us are – we are all happier, if we are able to have options and make choices.
