California Nursing Homes Nursing homes in California are considered Health Care facilities and are often found located within a hospital setting. They are licensed and examined closely and carefully by the California Department of Health Services. Nursing Homes are allowed to care for individuals with needs that are beyond the range of other care facilities, i.e. Assisted Living Communities, or Adult Family Homes. As medical facilities they are permitted to deal with complex and potentially serious medical problems, such as infections, wound care, IV therapy, coma care, etc. Doctor’s orders are required for admittance into a nursing home. Medi-Cal may cover the cost of a nursing home stay in California for individuals who do not have enough financial resources for residential care options. A Skilled Unit (Rehab) in a Nursing Home is able to provide rehabilitation on a short-term basis after a hospital stay for injury or illness. Medicare may cover these costs.
